This month’s issue of Gracie Magazine features  Steve Rosenberg after winning the Pan Am 2009. “Steve Rosenberg (Nova Uniao), in a match that shook the gymnasium, here celebrating with his master Gustavo Dantas.”

The PFC 13 “Validation” took place at The Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, CA on May 8^th.

Pat Runez (AZ Combat Sports) became the PFC’s 125-pound champion in impressive fashion, as he had little trouble with the tough but overmatched Anthony Perales.

Runez controlled the first round, both standing and on the mat, before locking in the belt-winning rear-naked choke at 2:28 of the second round. Runez improves to a perfect 6-0, and has contender Raamba Somdet in his sights.

“Raamba, if you’re coming back… I want that fight,” Runez told the crowd.

The Graplers Quest took place in Las Vegas on May 9th. GD JIU-JITSU/Nova Uniao was well represented by 11 competitors, who brought 13 medals back to AZ!

The standouts of the Team were Kristina Barlaan and David Margraff. Kristina won the Advanced/No-Gi/Feather weight and the Blue Belt/Feather Weight. David won the Blue Belt Super Heavy and took second at the No-Gi/Intermediate/Super Heavy.

The GD JIU-JITSU Events in association with the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (AZSBJJF) is proud to announce the Arizona Brazilian Jiu-jitsu State Championship 2009. The competition will take place on July 11 & 12 at the Westwood High School located at 945 W. 8th St. in Mesa, AZ 85201

Gracie Mag will be covering the event.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition will offer kids, juveniles, Adult (Male and Female), Masters and Senior Divisions.

Registration

. Each competitor must fill out the registration form online. The Pre-registration fee is $50 for the adults and juveniles (16-17 yrs) or and $35 for the kids division until July 3^rd. After this date,$60 for adults and juveniles and, $45 for the kids.

KIDS Division is limited to 200 Competitors.

Juvenile, Adult, Masters and Senior Divisions are limited to 350 competitors.

. All registrations must be received by Wednesday, July 8^th by 11:59 pm. No registrations after this date. Registration fees are non-refundable. No exceptions.

. The brackets will be released before the tournament. On Friday, July 10^th, the brackets will be available online at our website.

.The weigh in system is the same used by IBJJF. The competitor will weigh in before his first match. If you don’t make weight, you will be immediately disqualified. Please make sure that you are in the correct weight category. You cannot change divisions, if you do not make your designed division. No changes will be accepted on the day of the tournament, and no refunds will be made. We offer an extra scale for people to check their weights before.

.This is a sport with rules, and making weight for your division is part of the rules.  In order to maintain the integrity of our tournament and the sport we STRICTLY enforce this policy, so please take responsibility and show up to the tournament at the correct weight for your division!

Miscellaneous Information

. The tournament is single elimination. Medals will be awarded to the 1^st place, 2^nd place and 3^rd place of each division. Athletes will not compete for the third place at the Juvenile, Adult, Master and Senior Division. Two bronze medals will be given. Only in the Kids Division will athletes be able to compete for third place in which both competitors will receive medals.

PRIZES

- All Juvenile, adult, master and senior competitors will receive a Tournament T-Shirt and a free issue of Gracie Magazine;

- The top three Kids schools will receive awards;

- The top three BJJ schools will receive awards;

- $1000 Cash Prize to the BLACK BELT Master/Open Class Winner* (*The Competitors must be born in or before 1979 in order to compete. Also, is mandatory to all black belts to register online. Deadline is on July 8^th ).

- All kids competitors will receive a medal, a certificate and a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Nintendo DS (Regardless of win or loss);

- The winners of the Juvenile and Adult Female Division have a chance to win an Ipod Touch;

- The winners of the Juvenile, adult, master and senior Divisions have a chance to win a 32” LCD Flat Screen TV;

You must win at least one match in order to qualify for the raffle!!!!

The 1^st Arizona Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kids Cup took place at the Broadway Recreation Center in Mesa, Arizona on April 25^th. The event promoted by GD Jiu-Jitsu Events, in association with AZ State BJJ Federation, was sponsored by Forever Fighter, Custom T-Shirt Warehouse, OTM Fight Shop, Gracie Magazine Association and Arizona Combat Sports. The event was dedicated to competitors between ages of 4 and 17 yrs old and was a great success with its debut at 163 competitors.

For the first time, GD JIU-JITSU Events promoted a food drive for the United Food Bank. This organization provides food to around 800.000 people in need per year. From now on, GD JIU-JITSU Events will be promoting Food Drives for the United Food Bank at every event.

The event brought competitors from Colorado, New Mexico, California, and Arizona, representing 26 different schools. Here is our Team’s results:

The Naga World Championship took place in Newark,NJ on April 4th and 5th. Nova Uniao AZ  was well represented by Annalyn Holmstrom, who took 1st place in the Blue Belt/flyweight division and 3rd place in the No-gi/Intermediate/flyweight.
